“He is probably one of the top five most prominent evangelicals in America and therefore in the world,” said Ted Olsen, news director for the evangelical magazine Christianity Today. “Hardly a day went by where we did not see Haggard quoted by someone. It was pretty rare for him not to have an opinion.”
The male prostitute, Mike Jones, 49, of Denver, said “Art”—as Ted Arthur Haggard called himself—answered one of his ads in 2003. “Art” told his paid partner he was visiting from Kansas City. To hide his identity, for the first year, Haggard called from a blocked number, then mostly from pay phones from the Colorado Springs area. In 2004 Haggard had Jones procure dangerous illegal drugs for him, which he used to “enhance” his experiences for the next two years.
Jones stated Haggard had paid for sex with him on an almost monthly basis over the previous three years. Jones says he was typically paid a “couple of hundred dollars,” but sometimes Haggard would pay him extra.
Haggard’s Fantasy, revealed to Jones, was having an orgy with “about six young college guys ranging from 18 to 22 in age.”
Haggard, at first, denied all charges. He claimed he had never met his accuser. He also denied having ever done drugs. He told a Denver television station, “I did not have a homosexual relationship ... I am steady with my wife. I’m faithful to my wife.”
Echoing Senator Larry Craig’s future denials, Haggard vowed, “I have not, I have never had a gay relationship with anybody.”
Like the Clinton scandals, fact after fact dribbled out. Trapped, Haggard told CNN

Why would Haggard contact a notorious local male prostitute for “a massage”?
After a year of paid encounters, Jones said Haggard asked him: “Hey, Mike, what do you know about meth?” “I don’t do it personally, but I know people who do.” I told him that some people think it enhances their sexual experience. He asked if I could help him get some. I located someone he could connect with. After that, he got it on his own. The last time he saw me, he was trying to get some
Ted Haggard of the National Association of Evangelicals, described by Time Magazine as one of the nation’s 25 most influential evangelicals, resigned his position as president over charges that he used thousands of dollars of church money to pay a male prostitute for homosexual acts and buy illegal drugs for at least three years.
